Embargo guidelines

Material intended for submission to or currently under consideration at the Journal of Clinical Investigation (JCI) is under embargo and therefore must not be discussed with the media. In the case of material that has been accepted for publication by the JCI, the publication date will be confirmed upon receipt of publication proofs. All articles remain under embargo until 12:00 pm Eastern Time on the date of publication. If authors opt to publish their article as an In-Press Preview prior to copyediting and layout, publication of the In-Press Preview version is considered the end of the embargo period. We reserve the right to halt the consideration or publication of a paper if our embargo policy is broken.

Distribution of a press release by the JCI

Prior to online publication of a batch of accepted articles, the JCI may choose to produce and distribute a short press release that summarizes select manuscripts. Press releases circulated by the JCI include links to complete versions of highlighted articles on a secure website, as well as the name, phone number, and email address of the corresponding author. Access is also granted to any other relevant material, such as an accompanying Commentary. Authors who wish for the JCI press release to include contact information for their institutional press office should supply these details, immediately following acceptance, to the address provided below. The content of the press release and the articles is embargoed until the time and date clearly stated on the press release. The content of the JCI press release remains at the discretion of the Editorial Board.

We reserve the right to remove from our press release distribution list any journalists who break our embargoes.

Distribution of a press release by an author’s institution

Authors are welcome to produce and distribute a press release through their institutional press office. Institutional press releases can be circulated no more than one week prior to the online publication date, provided that the release clearly states the embargo date and time and that the work is being published in the JCI. The sender of the press release is responsible for confirming the final embargo information with the Journal in advance of distribution.

Communication with the media

Authors of in press JCI articles may provide preprints, grant interviews, and discuss their work with members of the press, but not more than one week prior to online publication of their article, and provided that the journalist agrees to abide by the JCI embargo. Authors are asked not to participate in public news conferences until the embargo has lifted. If a member of the media wishes to reprint figures and/or tables from a JCI article, please direct the request to the JCI as outlined below.

Authors are welcome to present material from their in-press JCI article to colleagues at scientific meetings. However, authors should not comment beyond the content of their presentation, nor provide whole copies of their paper, presentation, or any part thereof to members of the press or other individuals in attendance.

Any questions or issues regarding prepublication publicity or the JCI embargo policy should be directed to:
