Effective with the January 4, 2022, issue, JCI is a Gold Open Access journal in which all content is freely available without charge to the user or their institution. Authors retain copyright to their work, which is published with a Creative Commons Attribution License (CC BY 4.0). Users of the articles are allowed to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, and link to the full texts of the articles, and use them for any other lawful purpose, without asking prior permission from the publisher or the author. The ASCI retains copyright to many articles published in issues prior to January 4, 2022; while such articles are freely available, permission may be required for reuse; see License Information for details.
The JCI deposits published research articles in PubMed Central, which satisfies the NIH Public Access Policy and other similar funding agency requirements.
The Journal meets cOAlition S requirements for authors who receive funding support from Plan S signatories and is fully compliant with Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI), Wellcome, and UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) open access policies; and indexed in Securing a Hybrid Environment for Research Preservation and Access (Sherpa Romeo).
Authors of accepted JCI manuscripts are assessed a publication fee of $5,600 for the Research and Clinical Medicine categories; and $1,200 for the Research Letter category. The fee supports the following expenses:
