Dual-Journal Submission gives you the option to submit your work for consideration by both the JCI and JCI Insight. Dual-Journal Submission increases your opportunity to find the right home for your work within the JCI Family of Journals and streamlines the peer-review process.
Papers submitted to the Dual-Journal Submission track are evaluated first by the JCI editors. If the JCI sends the manuscript for review, reviewers will be asked to comment on the suitability and specify required revisions for both the JCI and JCI Insight.
If the JCI editors determine after peer review that your work is suitable for further consideration by the JCI, you will receive a decision with comments from reviewers and requirements for revision. In this case, JCI Insight will not receive your submission.
If the JCI editors determine after peer review that your work is not suitable for the JCI, your manuscript will automatically be routed to the JCI Insight editors for evaluation with the existing reviews. The JCI Insight editors will use the provided reviewer comments to quickly tailor a decision for JCI Insight.
Should the JCI editors decline to send your work for external review, the manuscript will automatically be assigned to a JCI Insight editor for an independent assessment.
If the JCI Insight editor sends the manuscript for peer review, reviewers will be asked to comment specifically on the suitability and specify revisions required for publication in JCI Insight. Decision letters will include comments from both the JCI and JCI Insight editors.
What are the benefits of using the Dual-Journal Submission process?
Integrating submission to both the JCI and JCI Insight saves time for authors and reviewers and efficiently identifies the journal that best suits their work.
What criteria determine suitability for the JCI and JCI Insight?
The journals have independent editorial boards. The JCI editors determine publication priority for manuscripts under consideration by the JCI; and the JCI Insight editors determine publication priority for manuscripts under consideration by JCI Insight.
As the original ASCI journal, the JCI is the premier venue for discoveries in basic and clinical biomedical science. Papers published in the JCI should provide a major conceptual advance over previous work and substantial new mechanistic understanding of pathogenesis.
JCI Insight is a forum for technically rigorous studies that yield new insight into the biology of disease or new therapeutic opportunities. Papers published in JCI Insight should add meaningfully to existing mechanistic or discovery-based knowledge or provide new observations that may initiate future research.
Will selecting Dual-Journal Submission adversely affect my chances of publishing in the JCI?
Selecting the Dual-Journal Submission process will not adversely affect consideration by the JCI. The JCI editors will evaluate your work in the same manner as they do papers submitted directly to JCI.
Can I use my Guaranteed Review options for Dual-Journal Submission?
Authors who are eligible for the ASCI Guaranteed Review (see details for the JCI and JCI Insight) or Reviewer Rewards program may use their JCI rewards for Dual-Journal Submission. Choosing one of these options will ensure that the JCI editors send the manuscript for external review. Authors may not use JCI Insight rewards for the Dual-Journal Submission track. Authors wishing to use JCI Insight rewards must submit directly to JCI Insight.
Can I transfer reviews from other journals for the Dual-Journal Submission process?
Yes. As for papers submitted directly to the JCI and JCI Insight, you may opt to include reviews received from another journal. The editors will consider this information along with the manuscript in determining priority. Note that if the editors of either journal decide to send the manuscript for review, it will be assessed by additional reviewers who will also have access to the previous reviews.
If I decide to submit directly to the JCI without opting for a Dual-Journal Submission, can I submit my manuscript to JCI Insight later?
Yes. If you submit a manuscript solely to the JCI for consideration and it is eventually rejected, you may submit directly to JCI Insight at any point after receiving your JCI decision. You do not need to inquire in advance about submission to JCI Insight. Your paper will be considered as new by JCI Insight and independently assessed.
