Mature lymphoid cells recirculate continuously from the blood to lymphoid organs and via
lymphatics back to the blood. In addition, after stimulation in one organ, B lymphocytes
transform into plaque-forming cells (PFC) in other organs. In these processes the spleen
plays a central role, and one of obvious clinical relevance, since splenectomy results in an
altered distribution of lymphocyte subsets and a high risk of sepsis. The extent of lymphocyte
