CD8+ T cells protect against infection from intracellular bacteria and parasites by lysing
infected targets. Here, a novel mechanism is discussed in which CD8+ cytolytic T cells
directly destroy intracellular pathogens by releasing an antimicrobial protein, granulysin,
from cytotoxic granules.
