Abstract
We investigated the regeneration ofcardiac lymphatic vessels and capillaries inthe infarcted myocardiac zones after acutemyocardial infarction in rats. The anteriordescending artery of the heart was ligated forinfarction and both immunohistochemistryand immunofluorescence were used to detectpathological changes of lymphatic vessels ininfarcted zone (IZ), infarcted margin zone (MZ) and remote margin zone (RMZ) on days7, 14, 21, and 28 after surgery. Dynamicvariation of lymphatic vessels existed in IZ, MZ and RMZ at different stages after surgery. At day 7, lymphatic vessels and capillarieswere not seen in the IZ, very thin lymphaticcapillaries were obviously increased in theinner layer of the margin zone, and enlargedand increased lymphatic capillaries werefound in the outer layer of margin zone. At14 days, a few sparsely arranged lymphaticcapillaries were observed in the IZ withoutmarked changes in the MZ. At 21 days, constricted regenerating lymphatic capillariesin MZ were decreased, and lymphatic vesselsexhibited sprouting towards the IZ. At 28days, more lymphatic capillaries emerged inthe IZ, and the morphology and number oflymphatic vessels and capillaries had returnedto normal. There were no marked changes oflymphatic vessels and capillaries in RMZcompared to control myocardium at the 4time points. This study demonstrates varied remodeling of lymphatic vessels and capillariesin the IZ and MZ after acute myocardialinfarction, and these changes in lymphaticvessels likely play an important role forrecovery of infarcted myocardiac function.
