Molecules with an appropriate balance between hydrophilic and hydrophobic character may
be spread as monolayers on the water surface. Under appropriate conditions these
monolayers may be built up onto a substrate as Langmuir-Blodgett (IB) films. This paper
reviews the types of molecule that are known to give good LB film formation, with especial
reference'to potential applications in molecular electronics.
