Publisher Summary This chapter describes the sexual development of malarial parasites. In
the genus Plasmodium, sexual development begins when a merozoite invades the host
erythrocyte, where it differentiates into a mature gametocyte. The sexual phase is completed
only on the formation of a uninucleate zygote within the bloodmeal of the insect vector.
