Thioacetamide-induced cirrhosis-like liver lesions in rats usefulness and reliability of this animal model

Summary Long term administration ofthioacetamide (0.03% in tap water) results in a
characteristic lesion in rat liver, which corresponds to cirrhosis-like patterns of micronodular
cirrhosis type after treatment over 3 months. During its development a reproducible temporal
course of biochemical and morphological changes can be recognized. After withdrawal of
the toxic agent this lesion persists for about 2 months. Then the cirrhosis-like alterations
