Pathologic and clinical studies have consistently demonstrated that platelets play a
significant role in the pathophysiology of atherothrombosis, and measurement of platelet
activity can identify individuals at increased cardiovascular risk. Although light transmission
aggregation is the historical 'gold standard'for platelet activity measurement, the large
sample volume and significant sampling time preclude this measurement from being widely
