Cells are protected from the cytotoxic and mutagenic effects of endogenous DNA damages
by base excision repair (see [1–4]). The DNA lesions recognized include spontaneous
deaminations and depurinations as well as alkylations and oxidative damages caused
primarily by hydroxyl radicals formed from diffusible hydrogen peroxide in a Fenton reaction.
The oxidative damages include single strand breaks, sites of base loss and a plethora of
