The intraocular pressure response to topical betamethasone appears to be genetically
determined. A study of patients with primary open-angle glaucoma, their relatives, glaucoma
suspects, and volunteers shows three populations as to degree of responsiveness. It is
suggested that these are the phenotypes which relate to the homozygous poor responder
(nn), the heterozygous responder (ng), and the homozygous greater responder (gg).
