BACKGROUND & AIMS: The Z variant (Glu342Lys) of α1-antitrypsin (AT) polymerizes and
accumulates in the hepatocyte endoplasmic reticulum (ER) predisposing to neonatal
hepatitis and liver cirrhosis. The resultant secretory defect leaves the lungs vulnerable to
