Objective To quantify the incidence of anemia and red blood cell (RBC) transfusion practice
in critically ill patients and to examine the relationship of anemia and RBC transfusion to
clinical outcomes. Design Prospective, multiple center, observational cohort study of
intensive care unit (ICU) patients in the United States. Enrollment period was from August
2000 to April 2001. Patients were enrolled within 48 hrs of ICU admission. Patient follow-up
