Renal intercalated cells (IC) are interspersed among the segment-specific majority
(principal) cells of the distal convoluted tubule, connecting tubule, and collecting duct (71,
144). Ultrastructurally, ICs are distinguished by their dark cytoplasm, high mitochondrial
density, cytoplasmic tubulovesicular structures, and apical microprojections (87). There are
