2. Group A streptococcal infection cannot be diagnosed reliably on clinical grounds; a rapid
strep test or throat culture is needed. 3. Although penicillin G therapy for 10 days remains the
gold standard, treatment of streptococcal pharyngitis for 5 days with several kinds of
cephalosporins or azithromycin is effective and has the advantage of greater compliance.
