Hepcidin is a circulating antimicrobial peptide which has been proposed to regulate the
uptake of dietary iron and its storage in reticuloendothelial macrophages. Transgenic mice
lacking hepcidin expression demonstrate abnormalities of iron homeostasis similar to Hfe
