Pathobiology of pulmonary hypertension: the role of platelets and thrombosis

Thrombosis and platelet dysfunction are potentially important pathophysiologic processes
that have been identified from descriptive studies from patients with pulmonary arterial
hypertension (PAH). Abnormalities in platelets and biochemical features of a procoagulant
environment within the pulmonary vasculature support a potential role of thrombosis in
disease initiation in some patients. In most cases, however, it remains unclear whether
thrombosis and platelet dysfunction are causes or consequences of the disease.
