▪ Abstract Cells monitor the physiological load placed on their endoplasmic reticulum (ER)
and respond to perturbations in ER function by a process known as the unfolded protein
response (UPR). In metazoans the UPR has a transcriptional component that up-regulates
expression of genes that enhance the capacity of the organelle to deal with the load of client
proteins and a translational component that insures tight coupling between protein
