The advent of cardiac biopsy techniques and the widespread use of open heart surgery
have made it possible to obtain cardiac tissue suitable for electron microscopic study from
patients with a variety of acquired and congenital heart diseases. Therefore, over the past 10
yr, a number of ultrastructural observations have been made on diseased human ventricular
myocardium. The purpose of this review is to summarize this new ultrastructural informa-tion.
