Cigarette smoke is composed of many com-pounds, both solid and gaseous. Because
nicotine is the most important compound in terms of the central nervous system and vascular
effects of smoking, and it is responsible for addiction to smoking, this review will focus on the
pharmacology of nicotine. Pharmaceutical nicotine is available as chewing gum,
transdermal patches, nasal spray, and inhaler, as pharmaceutical agents to facilitate
