In the mammalian kidney, there is a direct anatomical contact between the end of the ioop of
Henle and the afferent arteriole of the parent nephron(17). The tubular cells at the point of
contact are termed macula densa cells because of the clear morphological difference
between them and the neighboring cells not in contact with the arteriole. At the point of
contact, the afferent arteriole contains granulated cells (epithelioid cells) in the media.
