MATERIALS AND METHODS Cells Mouse leukemia cells (L5178Y) were used throughout
this experiment. The cells were provided by Dr. K. Sato (Osaka University). L5178Y cells
were maintained in Eagle's essential medium (Nissui Seiyaku Co., Tokyo) containing 10%
calf serum instead of horse serum in a small tube, with a doubling time of 10-12hr. HeLa
cells, which were layer-cultured in a glass petri dish in 3ml of a medium, were also used.

MATERIALS AND METHODS
Cells Mouse leukemia cells (L5178Y) were used throughout this experiment. The cells were provided by Dr. K. Sato (Osaka University). L5178Y cells were maintained in Eagle's essential medium (Nissui Seiyaku Co., Tokyo) containing 10% calf serum instead of horse serum in a small tube, with a doubling time of 10-12hr. HeLa cells, which were layer-cultured in a glass petri dish in 3ml of a medium, were also used. Chemicals and Isotope As listed in Table I, various sulfur-or chlorine-containing purines and related ribonucleosides were synthesized by the methods reported previously (cf. Ref. 18 and literature cited therein) and they were purified by checking their melting points. Amphotericin-B (Fungisone; GIBCO, Grand Island, NY) was purchased from Sankyo Co., Tokyo. All chemical agents were freshly prepared by dissolving in dimethyl sulfoxide at 10mg/ml concentration before the experiments. All control experiments were done by adding the same amount of dimethyl sulfoxide alone as used for dissolving the chemical agents. 3H-thymidine (20Ci/mmol) from New England Nuclear, Boston, Mass., was used as the isotope.
