It is the purpose of this paper to describe situations where hemolytic strep-tococcal infections
were traced to nasal carriers dispersing large numbers of the organisms, as well as to nasal
carriers whose actual streptococcal output could not be conveniently studied. Included in the

It is the purpose of this paper to describe situations where hemolytic strep-tococcal infections were traced to nasal carriers dispersing large numbers of the organisms, as well as to nasal carriers whose actual streptococcal output could not be conveniently studied. Included in the report are (1) 11 hospital infec-tions,(2) 7 instances where one or more soldiers were hospitalized from a bar-rack housing a nasal carrier of the same streptococcal type,(3) 10 cases of pharyngitis or tonsillitis due to a rare streptococcal type (type 46), hospital-ized from a barrack which housed, be-fore the first case appeared, a single nasal carrier of type 46 streptococci, and (4) an epidemic of food-borne type 1 streptococcal sore throat traced to a food handler with a strongly positive nose culture, carrying huge numbers of the same type streptococci on his hands.
