The latent transforming growth factor-ß (TGF-ß) 1 binding proteins (LTBP-1–4) are secreted
multidomain glycoproteins, three of which are central to TGF-ß regulation (1, 2). LTBP-1 is a
component of the latent TGF-ß complex that consists of TGF-ß, the TGF-ß propeptide, and
LTBP (Fig. 1)(3). TGF-ß is synthesized as a homodimeric proprotein, and the dimeric
propeptide is cleaved intracellularly from the growth factor (4). Unlike most propeptides that
