The PDX-1 homeodomain transcription factor regulates pancreatic development and adult
islet β cell function. Expression of the pdx-1 gene is almost exclusively localized to β cells
within the adult endocrine pancreas. Islet β cell-selective transcription is controlled by
evolutionarily conserved subdomain sequences (termed Areas I (− 2839 to− 2520 base
pairs (bp)), II (− 2252 to− 2023 bp), and III (− 1939 to− 1664 bp)) found within the 5′-
