This review provides a brief historical background to the foundation of primate reproductive
neuroendocrinology that was laid by Ernst Knobil during the late 1960s and early 1970s.
This is followed by a discussion of studies conducted over the last two decades that I view as
having contributed to the current understanding of the field of primate reproductive
neuroendocrinology. The review concludes with a short summary of key questions that
remain to be addressed.
