Characterization of the ability of IFNs to induce immediate early genes led to the
identification of the STAT (signal transducers and activators of transcription) signaling
paradigm. STATs are activated at the receptor and then directly transduce signals to the
nucleus. Subsequent studies have determined that all cytokines transduce critical signals
through this pathway.
